Two Somali journalists were killed recently and three were wounded in the city of Baidoa after two bombings hit a restaurant regularly frequented by the media and officials, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported.
Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the double attack.
The names of the dead are TV and radio reporter Abdulkadir Ahmed Mayow (27) and TV cameraman Mohamed Isaq Barre (25), while Abdulkadir Hassan Jokar, Mohamed Adan Socdaal and Abdulkadir Hassan Ibrahim were all injured.
All of them worked for privately-owned media outlets.
“This is the deadliest attack against the Somali press this year,” CPJ East Africa Representative Tom Rhodes said in a stateùent.
“We urge authorities to do their utmost to target the masterminds and end a cycle of impunity for journalist murders in Somalia.”
