South African radio station 5FM has scooped five nominations out of nine categories in the prestigious Worldwide Radio Summit Awards based in Hollywood, US, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), which owns the station, announced early this week.
The award ceremony will take place on 2-4 May 2013 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, SABC said.
The station has been nominated by readers of the industry website, www.allaccess.com, which claims to be the world’s largest online in news, music and information resource for radio worldwide.
5Fm presenter Gareth Cliff, a controversial figure, has been nominated for the Best International Radio Personality Award. Reacting to the nomination, Cliff said:
“This is awesome for myself and for the station and I am absolutely thrilled. South Africa has the best listeners, they are so diverse, and without them tuning in day after day, this nomination would not be possible. I thank them for this.”
Here is how the station’s list of nominations looks like:
• Best International Radio Personality: Gareth Cliff
• Best International Online Presence
• Most Influential Station
• Most Innovative International Radio Station
• Best International Programme Director and Controller: programme manager Tim Zunckel
Zunckel said: “I love radio because of its emotions and the tenacity of this extremely close community. Just being nominated among the best in the industry on a global platform can only be described as an honour and privilege. I am very grateful.”
Station manager Aisha Mohamed said: “We are highly honoured to be nominated in the Influential International Radio Station category, especially alongside globally powerful radio players.
“It is a huge achievement to have not only the 5FM brand but also Gareth and Tim recognised on a global scale. It is testament to the dedication of an exceptional and talented team and we are very proud to have them part of the 5FM family.”
