The Senegalese female basketball players won the Afrobasket Women 2015 after beating Cameroon 81-66 in Yaoundé (Cameroon) on Saturday.
The bustling West Africans, who beat the Central Africans convincingly in front of their home crowd, have therefore qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro due to take place in Brazil next summer.
Saturday’s triumph was Senegal’s 11th African title.
Despite having the best sports infrastructure on the continent and being among Africa’s well-paid players, South African women failed to win a single game, and therefore clinched the last spot at the tournament.
Defending champions Angola, who were hoping to outplay all the teams and take home the title once again, could only manage a 4th place after their surprising defeat (65-55) at the hands of Nigeria.
Losing finalist Cameroon and silver medal winners Nigeria will also take part at the 2016 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT).
This is the final standings of AfroBasket Women 2015:
