How would you feel if you were to listen to the mellow sounds of jazz while you are strolling the vineyards towards the ancient castle, where you can taste the finest wines? And later you can whistle your way up to the hill, as the ancient stones and the aldermen who protect the city greet and carry you gracefully to show you the magnificent Palais Cardinal where the concerts take place in the evening.
Well, all this, coupled with other wonders, you can only experience them on 18-21 July 2013 at the Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival in France. No line-up yet, but the organisers said no need to worry, all will be revealed on 15 April 2013.
The organisers said on the festival website that the inaugural edition’s line-up (in 2012) included Earth Wind and Fire Experience, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Brian Blade & the Fellowship, Zakir Hussain and Jacky Terrasson. Michel Portal, Grégoire Maret, Glenn Ferris, Malia, Minino Garay, Opus Jam and Cecile McLorin, among others, also graced the first millésime.
The city of Saint-Émilion, population about 2080, is located 35 km (22 miles) northeast of Bordeaux between Libourne and Castillon-la-Bataille in the region of Aquitaine. The Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival, now in its second edition, is the brainchild of prominent saxophonist Tommy LiPuma and Robert Parker.
LiPuma is a 30-time Grammy-nominee and three-time Grammy winner saxophonist, while Parker is a veteran lawyer turned wine expert and critic, a reputation that earned him the nickname of ‘wine emperor’.
The Saint-Emilion Jazz Festival, a full package of music, wine, vineyards, ancient stones in unison with a passion for a village, takes places in the following venues:
- La Scène des Douves du Palais Cardinal (Douves 200)
- La Salle des Dominicains (Faure)
- Le Village du Festival (Guader), Guadet Park
The festival’s partners include Mairie de Saint-Émilion, Office de tourisme de Saint-Emilion, Pigeon SA/Nissan, Renault, Fonds d’Action Sacem and Yamaha Pianos, among others.
