South Africa’s singing bird Jessica Mbangeni will perform at the Lyric at Gold Reef City Casino in Johannesburg on Friday 26 September, a show that she will use as a platform to launch her album ‘IGoli’.
IGoli – which means in Zulu “in Joburg” – is a live album comprising 11 tracks, most of which were composed by singer, with one track (UmaXhosa) penned by the late jazz great Victor Ntoni.
Ntoni, who passed away last year, also co-produced IGoli alongside Gabriel Stuurman and Lawrence Matshikiza. The album has been independently released through the singer’s own label, KwaNtu Entertainment.
Mbangeni’s music consists of the fusion of Afro-jazz and Afro-soul elements with traditional Xhosa rhythms. Jessica, a mother of three, has crafted an irresistible medley of music and poetry steeped in the culture of her Eastern Cape upbringing.
Over the years, The Eastern Cape-born fantastic artist has toured the world with the Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir, and has also worked with local luminaries such as Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Dolly Rathebe, Abigail Kubeka and Thandi Klaasen.
