(Press Release: TBCSA). The seventh Hotel Investment Conference Africa (HICA) will be held in Durban, South Africa, on 8-10 May 2013, the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) announced yesterday.
The annual event aims to provide a platform for potential investors, developers and operators in the local and regional hotel, and accommodation sectors to discuss investment opportunities that exist in the Southern African region, the organisers said.
HICA 2013 is themed Shifting Gear, and will focus on tourism growth and hotel development opportunities within the region.
TBCSA CEO Mmatšatši Ramawela said: “Although South Africa still presents a number of opportunities for investment, all indications are that more operators are seeking opportunities elsewhere in the continent and naturally Southern Africa as a region presents a good case for many investors.”
The programme includes discussions on various issues affecting the sectors and lessons learned from neighbouring countries, which have seen hotel investment grow in recent years.
At the centre of discussion will be how the sector will move beyond discussing issues of regional economic integration and start taking real action, according to Mamawela.
HICA is a platform for business people in the hotel and accommodation sectors – major and emerging – investment groups, and other role players and interested parties in the tourism sector development.
Other product owners in the various tourism sectors, such as bed and breakfast owners, and other small establishments are welcome to attend.
The conference will be addressed by local and international business leaders, including Helder Pereira, CEO of Redefine International Hotels, Protea Hotels Group MD Arthur Gillis, and Michael Tollman.
South African tourism minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, who will speak on the second day of the event, will then be joined by his counterparts from Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe in a panel discussion on the issue of achieving tourism growth through regional integration.
TBCSA is organising the event in association with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism in KwaZulu-Natal Province, Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal and Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, and the Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa (RETOSA).
“We encourage South Africans who are interested in the tourism sector to attend this conference so that they can identify investment opportunities, identify growth opportunities and have access to information on the state of the tourism business environment,” Ramawela said.
The organisers also call on businesses to showcase their brands and products at the event.
