In the mood for some wildly uproarious fun? Then be sure to take in a night of Jittery Citizens, impromptu theatrical comedy at its most hilarious, which will be storming the Johanneburg theatre scene with hilarity and other such craziness, at Montecasino Theatre Studio on 10 July, and at The Barnyard Rivonia on 24 July.
After harvesting massive success at the 2013 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the comedians of Jittery Citizens are heading to Johannesburg, where they plan to stir up a frenzy of fun in the process, and have audiences collapse with laughter.
Jittery Citizens brings sharp-as-a-tack, short-form improvisational comedy to the South African stage, which is guaranteed to invoke spontaneous laughter from even the most serious audiences.
Born in Johannesburg in 2012, this new improved company has come just in time to South African stages, when audiences need something that’s not only fresh and funny but highly innovative and fast-paced, too. Jittery Citizens brings it all, from laugh-out-loud in-the-moment one-liners to audience interaction and downright raucous on-stage behaviour.
Three talented and quick-witted South African performers, namely Alex Radnitz, Jessica Taylor and Claudine Ullman, make up the Jittery Citizen troupe, who collectively decided on the name because “we feel it is a good description of South African citizens.”
Their greatest desire is to deliver a genuine improvised experience to audiences. “We want them to feel that we represent everyday people and experiences as well as delving into our fantasy of how we see the world,” say these Jittery Citizens.
“We are taken aback at the way in which our audiences have embraced our show at the National Arts Festival, festino’s are wearing our merchandise and coming back night after night for more.
Audiences at this year’s festival have been fantastic with almost every show jam packed, we can’t wait to get back to Jozi and perform our improve hearts out to our Joburg crowds.”
With the support of some of Joburg’s finest and funniest actors, they make up everything on the spot with the audiences feeding them suggestions and ideas. Imagine the pure unadulterated fun when they have to make up comic scenarios dictated by the audience and then switch characters when told to. This and more hilarity makes up a night of Jittery Citizens.
The talented trio launched their debut show at the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square in October last, and their comic antics have been well received by enthusiastic audiences, therefore got rave reviews. The three usual suspects will be joined on stage by following well-known actors:
- Toni Morkel,
- Tony Bentel
- James Cains
- Briony Horwitz
- Kyla Davis
- Dylan Horely
- Mpho Osei-Tutu, and
- Roberto Pombo
The Barnyard performance will also feature a special appearance by crazy musical comedian Deep Fried Man, who will be MCing on the evening.
