Global energy summit aims to address local skills shortfalls

Power-Gen Africa and DistribuTECH Africa, a joint energy summit that will take place in March 2014 in South Africa, will present a series of in-depth technical training workshops aimed at addressing local skills shortfalls in this sector, the organisers said this week.

The two events will be held simultaneously at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 17-19 March 2014.

Selected experts will offer free technical training workshops specially, which have been specially designed to offer delegates the unique opportunity to receive training in various categories of the generation, transmission and distribution fields, US-based PenWell Corporation, which owns and is funding the events, said.

Power-Gen Africa and DistribuTECH Africa 2014 are expected to attract industry experts and power industry professionals from across Africa and abroad.

The two events have been officially sanctioned as Continual Professional Development (CPD) events by the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE). It is in this spirit that the summit will also include optional extra WADE Africa Decentralised Energy workshops, besides the free workshops.

The WADE workshops, focusing on the promise of decentralised energy to light up Sub-Saharan Africa, will include expert presentations on:

• Policies and programs that will create the needed incentives for investment

• The outlook for natural gas supplies

• Integration of renewables

• Distributed technologies, CHP, trigeneration, and onsite power production
