Four-time African champions Ghana have humiliated Niger 3-0 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port-Elizabeth, and qualified into the quarter-finals of the 29th Orange Africa Cup of Nations. This easy victory and star performance by the Black Stars undoubtedly put them in the same class with the Elephants of Ivory Coast as potential winners of the continental title.
Asamoah Gyan (6th minute), Christian Twasam Atsu (23rd) and John Boye in the 49th minute scored for the Black Stars to set up a tricky clash against giant killers and debutants Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.
In the other game played in the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, inconsistent Congolese were made to pay a heavy price for their laziness and lack of composure by the Eagles of Mali, drawing 1-1, and leaving Mali to enter the den of Bafana Bafana in the second round. The only goals of the game were scored by Anderlecht star Dieumerci Mbokani on penalty in the 3rd minute and Mamadou Samassa in the 11th minute for DRC and Mali, respectively.
