A total of 10 194 people, including women and children, were killed by the Ebola virus in West Africa, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, according to the latest figures published by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The other deaths came from Nigeria, Mali and Togo. Reports said one US citizen has also died after being infected by the virus in Africa.
The total number of cases currently stands at 24 700, WHO said.
Though the virus has since shown signs of weakening, the UN health agency and several governments in West Africa have urged populations to continue being alert and report any new case to the health authorities.
