Burkina Faso in pole position, Nigeria and Zambia on the edge

Burkina Faso Stallions’ 4-0 convincing victory over Ethiopia last night in Nelspruit put them in pole position in group C with four points, pushing Zambia and Nigeria, who drew 1-1 earlier, on the edge of Afcon 2013.

The Stallions, who drew their first game against the Super Eagles of Nigeria 1-1, came back on the pitch highly motivated and firing in all directions, and humiliated Ethiopia to put one foot in the quarter-finals.

Lorient striker Alain Traoré was the hero of the game, scoring twice and Kone and Pitroipa added one each to earn the West African team a well-deserved win, and leave holders Zambia and former champions Nigeria starring at the barrel of the gun.

Zambia and Nigeria have two points each, after drawing their pulsating game 1-1 – a game Chelsea star John Obi Mikel would love to forget quickly for missing a penalty in the 25th minute.

The usual suspect Emmanuel Emenike, who scored in the previous game against Burkina Faso, scored again yesterday in the 57th minute to hand his team the lead. But a well-taken penalty by South Africa-based Zambian goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was enough to cancel Emenike’s goal and bring the two heavyweights on equal foot.

Reigning champions Zambia have had a slow start of the tournament, leaving many analysts to wonder whether they will even make it to the quarter-finals.
